Sonnet: John Donne

1) If Death was a new member of the class, I would be completely neutral with him. I would not be mean or too nice. I would treat exactly like everyone else because i could not care less if he killed me. Just like when John Donne quotes "we wake eternally" and there is something better for us in the after life. The Poet however was angry with death. He thought it was proud for nothing, so the poet spoke to death as if trying to provoke it in telling it that you are worth nothing.

2) Who better than "Death" is there that kills people or causes the death of people and feel proud of it.

3) His condescending tone shows that he is annoyed with Death. He tells Death "be not proud" because Death thinks of itself as "mighty". He provokes death by telling it that poppy can make us sleep as well, and that strokes can kill better. He even tells death that you will die in the end.

4) "poppy or charms can make us sleep well"
"And better than thy stroke"
"Death, thou shalt die"
"Slave to fate"

5)Adversary means a rival/enemy. People are usually afraid of their enemies. Because people are generally afraid of death therefore death is there enemy.

6) When we wake up after we die in the hereafter we will wake eternally. Hence, death is powerless at that moment.
