Metaphors (Up Is Good & Down Is Bad)

1) Identify or choose a concept which we understand through metaphor.
The metaphor that I have chosen is Up Is Good & Down Is Bad.

2) List all the phrases/expressions that reflect this metaphor.

  • She'll rise to the top.
  • All upcoming events are listed in the paper.
  • She is morally upright, and an upstanding citizen.
  • Wake up.
  • I am on top of the situation.
  • The number of books printed each year keeps going up.
  • Things are looking up.
  • He was feeling down.
  • He couldn't rise above his emotional breakdown.

3) Explain the way this particular metaphor structures our perception understanding.

The metaphor "up is good" makes many changes in our perception on many different things. For example when you are happy you are feeling "up" where as if you are sad then you are going to feel "down". Basically anything that is good is known as "up" and anything that is bad is known as "down". For example when you fall down you feel pain therefore it's a bad thing whereas when you fly you feel good so its an "upper".

4) Imagine a different way of conceptualizing this topic or identify the similarities and differences in another language. How would that change our understanding/perception?

To look at this metaphor in other language it won't make much sense, although some of the expressions and phrases. For example I fell down is the same exact thing in which represents pain which is "down", whereas the rest of the phrases wouldn't make much sense.
