1) If Death was the newest member of the class i would befriend him. This is because he has the power to take away my life and I don't think he would do that if we were friends. I think that when John Donne is talking to Death it is as though he is looking down at him. His tone is pretty condescending. In this situation Death thinks that it is so powerful and has such high standards, however the poet comes a long and degrades him. For instance he says "Death, be no proud..." or "...poor Death..."
2) Death was probably characterized so that the writer can feel like he is talking to someone instead of a concept. Also, throughout the poem the poet does not look at Death as a more superior concept and so by personifying it he is giving him human qualities, which means that he is equal to every other person- there is no difference between him and us.
3)The poet has a serious tone "death thou shall die". He is talking to him as if hes someone he really hates and cannot stand. It is also condescending he is looking down at him while trying to decrease deaths power and superiority. When he was speaking to death it felt like the popular girl at school is stripping the little confidence that the shy new girl has. Although he seemed to have a strong tone he still seemed unsure about himself, as though he was trying to convince himself about something.
4) "thou art slave to fate, chance, kings and desperate men" this shows that deaths jobs is not nice since he has to spend time with poison and sickness which is why he should not be proud.
5) "though some have called thee-Mighty and dreadful" and this is what enemies do to each other. Your enemy is the person who does things that you can't support or that you hate and in this case this is how "death" is represented.
6)"one short sleep past, we wake eternall-and death shall be no more;Death, though shalt die" after dying once you won't die again as you will live for ever (after death) so 'death' is going to new meaningless if a person is living an eternal life.
7) Most cultures view death as an adversary since it takes away the lives of their loved ones and sometimes it could be harsh. However there are some cultures that view death as a positive thing because they believe in reincarnation . At the same time I think that the way that people view death depends on the way that it occurred. For instance if it was an old sick person then we would say at least now he's at peace where he is not experiencing pain (lived a full life). On the other hand if a younger person died because of an accident or a harsh situation then people would have a different take on it.
