1) The unique features that stand out are the specific words that he uses coming from his native language such as "Lakota" , "Ogalala". these are not the type of words we use in our english today, so they stand out as being different and unique words we haven't seen before.
2) also another example, is when he refers gold as "yellow metal" when he sais "...and they wanted to have a road up through our country to the place where the yellow metal was".
3) He also uses alot of dates through out his language "Moon of the pooping tree", "Moon of the changing season"
4) Numerous similes are used when referring to nature through out his language, which is what mostly makes the Language different from any standard one. The way that he describes different things, people, or events in his life also. for example he said: "...that a strange race had woven a spider's web all around the Lakotas"
2) what do you think he means by "the bitten moon" ? what kinds of qualities does his language reflect?
The "Bitten Moon" probably means that it doesn't show completely. this is an example of another metaphor to describe the effect. this is also an example of how he doesn't use straightforward language to describe some of the sentences.
3) Black Elk's language reflects the way he perceives the world. How does language communicate perception?
By looking through someones language we can easily come up with perceptions of their religion, culture, and their upbringing. therefore, by looking through black elks language we can tell his upbringing was mostly around nature, and the love of nature. coming from his metaphors, he perceives the world mainly by the wildlife around him.
4) What differences do you note between Black Elk's language and your own? What can these differences tell us about our different cultural values?
My language is definitely so much more different than his, because the language i use is more "modern", and might be a little more sophisticated since the language i use doesn't originally come from a certain tribal language like his. our cultural values are different because the way i perceive the world and the events in my life doesn't all revolve around nature, an the type of upbringing that black elk lived around.
