Weapons of Mass Destruction

03/22/2003, General Tommy Franks
"There is no doubt that the regime of Saddam Hussein possesses weapons of mass destruction. As this operation continues, those weapons will be identified, found, along with the people who have produced them and who guard them."

What's meant by the phrase 'weapons of mass destruction' is nuclear weapons.  However, using that phrase wouldn't be as effective, as the US and many of their allies also have nuclear weapons as well.  Thus, it would lead to Iraq not looking as bad and Hussein not seeming like as much of a threat.  By using the phrase 'weapons of mass destruction', the weapons are made to look like these huge boogymen which can come out of nowhere to wreak havoc anywhere in the world.  It also contrasts them from American weapons, as these will be used to destroy and cause pain fro no good reason, while American weapons are used as a last resort to end a conflict and ensure peace.

By making these weapons look so bad, it will create something of an authority-disorder of Saddam vs. the World, where he's a huge threat to the rest of the world and needs to be removed from power, and control over these weapons which he's using to hold the world hostage.  Which is what America wants to do.  Go apple pie and bald eagles.
